A Quotable Introduction

• We need to tell someone else a story that describes our experience because the process of creating the story also creates the memory structure that contains the gist of the story for the rest of our lives. Tell Me a Story. Roger Shanks.

We are in the twilight of a society based on data. As information and intelligence becomes the domain of computers, society will place new value on the one human ability that can’t be automated: emotion. Imagination, myth, ritual, stories – the language of emotion – will affect everything from our purchasing decisions to how well we work and communicate with others.
Dream Society: How the Coming Shift from Information to Imagination Will Transform Your Business. Rolf Jensen.

Story grammar is the "ability to encapsulate, contextualize, and emotionalize information, understanding and experiences for yourself and others - becoming vastly important in the Conceptual-Information Age.
Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the World. Daniel Pink. Pink names “story” as one of six key attributes essential in today's market place.

• The novelty and technical fun of multi-media can sometimes divert and endanger the quality of a story. When an author finishes their digital storytelling, it should be remembered for its soul, not the bells and whistles of technology.
DigiTales: The Art of Telling Digital Stories.** Bernajean Porter.

A Planet Full of Personal StoriesDigiTales_campfire.jpg

At the end of the day who we are as a people are the stories we tell ourselves. There is no shortage of people on the planet with stories to tell and a desire to express them. The power of ancient storytelling is being rediscovered and revived at a time in our world when we are being challenged to redefine who we are, our connections with others and our ability to make meaning of a fast-paced, chaotic world. There is a kind of magical power of releasing our own story into local and global communities. Personal stories about what we know and have experienced creates understandings, builds positive relationships, and leverages shared values and respect between people of different communities or cultures. Educators are exploring the many types and purposes for digital storytelling as an emerging communication form. But while multi-media skills and content standards are being developed as "brainware", it may be equally important to remember that good storytelling also nourishes our inner lives while allowing us to deeply connect with the humanity of others. Our world and our lives could use a LOT more of that!

Storytelling is Considered to Be at the Core of Human Intelligence.

Storytelling is emerging as an important vehicle we can use to make sense of our lives, values and experiences—it also gives a lot of sticking power to whatever we are learning or trying to understand in the world. The more people are buried in the mind-numbing avalanche of today’s information, the greater the importance of stories in making sense of the endless pieces of data. It is the act of telling our personal story - of creating an emotional connection to information and experiences - sharing in story form what we know and understand from an event or topic that provides a "sense-making" process enabling our brains to organize a myriad of factoids.

The Art of Digital Storytelling

We have a lot of room to grow in embracing and excelling in the communication form of digital storytelling. Digital Storytelling (DS) is not as many believe just the latest technical fad. It builds on the rich, ancient tradition of oral storytelling by combining the narrative story with a palette of technical tools (sound, visuals, voices). This gives communities the unique modern-day ability to share the "story of us" across time and cultures. In digital storytelling, as you weave the voice narration, images and music together to unfold a sensory experience, you also strive to share the essence of meaning or value this experience has made for your life. Developing a “moral lesson” that expresses the wisdom or point to the story is an essential element that organizes the entire personal narrative making digital storytelling very unique from other types of digital stories.
